Romantically Apocalyptic Webcomic
by Vitaly S Alexius
Charles Snippy finds himself lost and alone at the end of the world. He makes a wish for a friend and meets Zee Captain, an eccentric lunatic luminary, who drags him on an adventure through the eldritch, deadly, questionable and limitless post-apocalyptic world of tomorrow, a place where Goodness makes the rules and everything has purpose and passion.
~A post-apocalyptic, dark comedy webcomic that I've been working on since 2005 by myself at first and then with friends from all around the world.

For the best viewing experience, read on the authors website. RR suffices if you just want the dialogue, but the text is more than 1/half of less than 1/3rd of the story.
There's a reason googling "apocalyptic webcomic" shows multiple pictures of this series in the top 5 image results. Just saying.
The story is an indescribable blend of Alice in Wonderland, Dr Strangelove, The Twighlight Zone, Calvin and Hobbes, etc. Abandon hope all ye that seek plot. Nothing but ambience awaits. Although, perhaps, ambience and plot just might be one and the same.
If you're concerned about political stuff, dont be. This comic started long before the hyperpolarization of many issues. It is intended as a timeless psychedelic experience, not a cultural fad. It is not safe to view this series through a serious lens.
I honestly love this series. I've been reading it ages ago back on the website and I am so happy it still continues! I've never read anything like this story anywhere else, it's original and so much fun. The world building, the characters - simply amazing! You can see this series has definitely special place in my heart. I highly recommend!
This is the webcomic that keeps on giving. Creator keeps going back and updating the lore and gorgeous artwork, even after a decade since it started. I started this comic when I was still in highschool but it has a way of sucking me back in! Would highly recommend if you're a fan of post-apocalyptic/dystopian stories with a twist of humor
This is one of the best works of fiction I have ever read, hands down. I originally found it due to the art being used in a Youtube music video, and lead me to the website that hosted the story. I am very glad that I found it, as it was a real treat to read. It wow'd me with it's visual story telling and brilliant writing.
The characters are colorful and unique, even down to the smallest side character. So much thought is put into every character that shows up, that it astounds me to this day.
The art is brilliant and creative, with lots of care and detail put into each and every piece. The edition of more art and more chapters has only increaced the overall qualitiy of the story. The overall style that is used ties everything together in a way that can not be understated.
The story is extremely well put together, calling back to previous events, and referencing things yet to come. Each read through you notice different things that make you either laugh or realize there is something more to a part you read before.
The formatting is very nice, with a nice spread of beautiful art and wonderful story telling to tie everything together. The grammar ties into that, reflecting each character's phrasings and giving them a voice of their own.
This is well worth a read!
I've reviewed this in the past but Vitaly is posting again with all new art, fueled by his skills and the insane emergence of AI art.
I don't think words can capture what this story is about better than the old cover art than is no longer up, a man in a trenchcoat, gas mask, and Russian officer's hat riding a scooter through the post apocalyptic wasteland really says it all.
The story follows Snippy as he is found in the wasteland by The Captain and brought into his totally-not-a-cult subterranean complex. There after he is subjected to endless ridiculous antics at the behest of his new captain, The Captain. Snippy is a regular guy trying to get by, a.k.a. not die, in the wasteland and The Captain is the mad test tube child of Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and Dr Evil.
Each chapter is accompanied by art which serves as a constant reminder that this is not all happening in some cheery office or candy factory but in a bleak wasteland.
Early on you ask questions. Why is the wasteland here? Who is the Captain? Who was Snippy giving tours to? What does Pilot pilot? These are great questions that you quickly forget to ask as you get swept up in the ridiculousness of the story.
Romantically Apocalyptic is a fun read in a dark setting. So if you ever watched Mad Max and thought "You know, this would be a lot better if they stopped to ogle a billboard cartoon pin up." Then this is the perfect story for you.
I remembered reading this graphic novel a few years ago, and Its been fun reading this.
The Art :
First of all, oh boi the arts are great on this one... The amounts of various artworks are basically perfect for my laptop and phone wallpaper (lol)
The Story :
Welp, me loves post-apocalyptic setting. So it's a win for me
The Character :
The characters on this story are fun and goofy, me like every humours on this...
So yeah, that's all from me... Keep up the great work Owo)
As a writer myself, I first stumbled into the tiny piece of masterpiece while juggling around the internet for a past-time... and it was quite an inspirational punch in the face during those early days. Fell in love with the overall design and apocalyptic environment, as well (and obviously) with the buttfuck crazy assemble of characters.
STYLE - I remember back in the day when I saw some BTS pictures of RA with the actors wearing the character's clothes and a green screen behind, with the author explaining he had an almost-infinite chest of apocalyptic background screen. I found that was very neat... I also love how the series shifts into artwork, 3d and real life people sometimes. It gives the narrative this natural fluidity and kinda surprises you from time to time. Sometimes it looks like an anime, sometimes it looks like a psychodelic videolog. It's a great part of its charm.
STORY - Perhaps the aspect I most love about RA it's like sometimes it all seems like a clusterfuck of mental disorder. You start to think nothing makes sense (and sometimes that's the point) - sometimes it doesn't want anything to do with the reader, yet sometimes it sucks you right into its abyss so you can process wtf is really happening. Then it gives bits of informations which you think it's just random bullshit until everything starts to slowly come together into this labyrinth of compreensible mess. All its madness, its lore, its vibrant questions that may seem daft but gets you thinking... I see it as a philosophy class sometimes - strange as it seems.
GRAMMAR - Well written as fuck. Sometimes it floods you with exposition left and right, sometimes it doesn't adds nothing but a chuckle. It's a fun and unpredictable ride that doesn't take itself serious, until it kick you in the balls with some awesome twists. RA sums up as a contradiction of itself, looking dumb and completely memeable on the surface-level... and I love that.
CHARACTERS - Man, I remember in the high-school, me and my friends choosing the characters each one was. I was always Snippy, cause I always felt like the most sane one in a group of jackasses. And I really like that a lot about them... how you can basically split Captain, Sniper, Pilot and Engie judging by their sanity level. (PS: In my headcanon, Cap is a girl). And as the story goes along you kinda learn the tradegy behind each one of them (Engie being the most broken sad one imo), and somewhat gives them more humanity. (but not Cap, she's a special shooting star). ;)
I have been in love with this since day one.
It's my happy place 🤩
...which, in retrospect, might perhaps should be concerning to me, but I refuse to be concerned about such things.
So, read and get lost in this gorgeous, confusing, funny, post-apocalypse place with me. We can be besties. Hands off my coffee mug.
This webcomic has my favourite worldbuilding in all media i know. Found this years ago, and it persists as the top spot, even if i found some other amazing works in the meantime. Not to mention that Vitaly constantly updates and tweaks what is already there. For example, it used to have some pacing issues, which were neatly ironed out!
TL;DR: R E A D T H I S
i had read the old rom.ac and had a blast, but after a long time witouth updates i forgot about it. coming back to this new and improved version, lets me see that even in the first, very chaotic, very random chapters many of the larger ideas, plot twists and time related shenanigans where there all along, some setups taking over 80 chapters to click in. very good story, probably some of the best art i have seen (it is my wallpaper) would recomend but i dont think its for everyone
solid 5/5
